In September, a large batch of white mushrooms suddenly appeared in the lawn of a garden I manage. Beyond how it looked, there was a real concern they could affect the roots if left alone, so — partly to stop them from spreading — I applied fungicide across the whole lawn.
After that, the white mushrooms disappeared. That said, I can’t say for sure it was the fungicide alone — it’s possible they would have died back naturally around that time anyway. Mushrooms tend to be pretty timing-dependent, so it’s hard to pin the cause down to just one thing.

Not long after, a different kind — brown mushrooms this time — showed up. And this was right after that full-lawn application. Since I’d rather not overuse fungicide, this time I only treated the spots where the mushrooms were actually growing, instead of the whole lawn again. It worked out — they died off right where they were without spreading, which was a relief.

Even with the same “mushrooms showed up” situation, the right response can change depending on how much there is, what kind it is, and the timing. Being out in the garden regularly is really what makes that kind of judgment call possible.
